It seems that good grades and college is all they care about and if you don't go to college you are presumed to be a loser. This is just my view from an Aussie point of view any insight would be very much appreciated.

Here's the thing, in brief summation. In America, there is much job competition, much competition period, actually, and education is imperative to land the best ones. Good grades are not that big of a deal (you can get straight A's and still not be accepted into an Ivy League). However, college is; you heard right in that respect. This is because people who have gone to college stand out above the "losers" who have not. It shows that they have the desire to further their education in what interests them. Out of that credo, degrees are sacred. Just a high school education is simply not sufficient because it covers so vast a range of material in so little time. College is more subject intensive after a student completes their initial courses. Therefore, people who have gone to college are presumed to know what to do.

Well... obviously you have no clue as to what you're talking about. Going to college is a *choice*, some people go, and some people don't. Your not considered a "loser" if you don't go to College! There are many people in this world that are Millionaires... and haven't stepped 1 foot inside a college class. But it does take hard work to get into college, and most importantly GRADUATE but that all depends on how well a person performs!

I can not say that it's an accurate assesment. I do know that we put a lot of value on higher education since it can teach you things in a particualr field that it may take years to get to in a job. Also if you have been through college you are seen as being able to learn it's like being certified. I knwo that if you coudl make it through college(with a decent GPA) that I can trust you to be hard working, able to learn and if what you graduated in matches the job you are going for then I know that you have a decent foundation from which to build on.

The average 25 year old with a college degree makes about $20,000 more than the average 25 year old without a degree -- and is more likely to be satisfied with his work.

The gap and level of satisfaction widen as time goes on.

Well getting into college determines your future. If you really want to make something of yourself then college should be important to you. I don't know about Australia but if its anything like Britain you get a lof of help from your gov't when your unemployed or w/e. Well we don't. We have to make ends meet ourselves. And i don't just want to sit around during my lifetime. I want to do big things. I want to become a doctor so of course college is going to be extremely important to me. Going to college shows that you didn't waste those 12 years you spent in school.

yeah well i don't think that's true. i think a lot of people who dont go to college are still really smart and if were given a chance would make it far. but college is really important because if you dont go there you most likely will have a bad job and low wage. and plus we have to go to college to learn the information for our future carrier for example if you want to be a scientist you have to go to school to study those aspects. if you go to colledge you atleaste have a chance and a shot at a lot of job oportunities. and plus if you want to open your own buisness or even work in one you have to have degrees/ deplomas abd stuff.
