Mother has a in-ground pool she doesn't want anymore what are my options? Fill it in?, Haul it out piece by piece? or just build a deck over it so the next homeowner can enjoy the pool? I'm hoping the deck is the winning answer, but what are the conditions of doing this? Leave some water in the pool? what about the rain?

While it is possible to build something over the pool, you still need to keep water in it. This means that the water may go stagnant and smell if you are not using chemicals and the pump(s). Emptying the pool could cause it to "pop" out of the ground due to the water table in your area. I would call a pool sales business in your area and discuss the options you have.

The problem with building a cover over it would be the ease of removing it later if you needed to. It could be built in sections about 4' wide, but they're still going to be heavy. Also, depending on the width of the pool, finding a treated joist that will span that distance will probably be a problem. It's not a real good idea to support the span in the middle of the pool, since the bottom of the pool is not designed to carry that weight. If the pool is narrow (16' or less), you could probably do it with 2x12's. Then use a treated plywood decking, or 4' pieces of 5/4 x 6 treated lumber, building the sections like you would a dock.

Hope that helps!

Answering the original part of this question - there are pool covers designed to be walked on. I don't know how it's built or what it's made of, but my uncle has one. Kids run on it, dogs walk over it - seems pretty sturdy.

If you want to get really crafty, you can build a bridge over the pool w/ a little patio & gazebo at the end (maybe some fountains in the pool on either side with updated landscaping around the perimiter)- it would make a really cool water feature in the yard, which is very desireable for future owners.

I suppose that you could build a deck over it as long as it's done right.
I would'nt recommend it though. I think that the best thing to do is to tear it down & fill it in. I bet the cost of doing that would be right around the cost ob building a deck, & it would be a much nicer come out.
Hope this helped, good luck!

Empty the water, build a deck out of something like MDF. If you put in thick MDF walls in a grid layout.. then just lay wooden floor panels over it. that should be strong enough (?).

Big job!
