Art isn't a linear progression, but a series of interlocking cycles. Japanes art inspired Van Gogh and the impressionists. Sub-Sahara African Art inspired the cubists like Picasso. And every time there were people on the sidelines screaming "heresy!". I can imagine people in 1140 in the Île-de-France, standing outside the newly-built St. Denis Abbey, murmuring "It's a disgrace! My 2-year old kid can do better than that! This fad will never catch on!"

One cannot answer double talk; you want to pick through history, retain the details that suit your purpose and disregard the rest. The cause is not advancable to any with more than a limited inteligence, and laughable to those who have more.
