1) It is a sign of sexual maturity. Women know that a man with pubic hair is old enough to have sex and father a child.
2) prevents chafing, so keeps you more comfortable
3) provides warmth in cold weather and helps air circulate to keep you cool in summer.
4) Most important, keeps air circulating to prevent possibly dangerous infections, both fungal and bacterial, which thrive in moist areas with poor air circulation. These infections can also cause foul odors, even if they are not yet established enough to cause a rash.
5) can stimulate the clitoris during sex.
Trimmed hair can allow some air circulation, but the blunt tips can irritate both your skin and your partner's skin. The naturally tapered ends of untrimmed hair are silky and don't poke.

Not all human parts have "functions" you know -- some are just leftover vestiges of evolutionary dead-ends, like your tailbone or your appendix... Pubic hair, however, at least one time had a "useful" purpose. Like all other mammals, humans give off various scents that others of our species can recognize -- genital areas smell different when a woman is fertile, for example, and pubic hair serves to hold and distribute those scents for others to pick up. Like many other mammals, long ago a human male would recognize a fertile (ovulating) female by her scent -- and a female could tell if a male was healthy and strong (and fertile) by his scent. All those clues are still there, we've just put social structure around sex rather than relying solely on animal instincts so they're not as important anymore -- we also cover up those areas with clothes now so the scents aren't nearly as obvious :)

Pubic hair does many things, It helps bring sweat away from your skin and genitals, It helps protect your genitals from certain bacteria and bugs. And it gives off a different oil then your normal hair that acts as a lubricant to help against chaffing.

The biological function is to block the openings from parasites and bacteria that cause infection (was probably helpful before we wore clothes) and now it also acts as a protectant against frictions.

I think one practical need for it is to prevent chafing in that area. Just try shaving it and you need lots of baby powder to keep things comfortable down there!
