Hi Bee

It COULD BE depression, so you'd need to get a diagnosis from a suitably qualified person who could conduct a face-to-face interview.

She could have a bipolar disorder, something like manic depressive. During the manic stage patients are hyper - overdramatic, excitable, make up stories, etc. (there are many ways in which this plays out) During the depressive stage they are neurotic, full of self pity or even self-loathing, can be suicidal, etc.
She could also simply be going through a depression and not know how to cope. The depression could have built up over a long time.
She could also however simply be addicted to pharmaceuticals. This kind of addiction (like most others) will mimic manic depression and can go a long way towards justifying these symptoms. Everyone has a pity party sometimes, but if it goes on and it is coupled with the swinging moods and medication abuse (especially alongside with alcohol abuse) it could simply be the addiction and its varying altered mental states playing themselves out.
Don't give up. If you care, and it sounds like you do - help her. Take her to a psychologist, because what you describe is certainly a greater "swing" than average.

if we are talkin about an older woman, then any attempts to change who she is wont work. this woman must first recognize that she has a problem and feel the need to change it. it just sounds like thats her personality mixed with stress. you can go to networktherapy.com and ask a counselor. they may not divulge much info, but if anything, counseling plus a mood stabilizer such as Lamictal may help.
