This is a contradiction in terms. Allow us to examine them:

Like by all - a weak leader that puts popularity over what needs to be done for the team as a whole. Doesn't want to hurt an underperforming team member's pysche so he doesn't call him out. The harder workers realize this situation and it becomes a mediocre - yet friendly - team.

Good leader - a person that always put the needs of the team ahead of the needs of individual members. It doesn't matter to her that her bestfriend is the weakest member of the group, she calls her out for her work (of course in a professional manner).

In good times these two traits can appear to go side-by-side but when the chips are on the table is when the true story comes out.

It is true that being in charge means you sometimes have to make unpopular decisions. Often though you can still be friends if you are respected when you make decisions as the boss, but treat the people under you as equal in terms of being human beings. Listen to them and explain things, ask for and take on board their feedback and don't be too quick to judge or question them unless it is warranted. I remember reading somewhere not that long ago that a good leader has the people they serve as leader looking to them for advice/authority rather than expecting it to be just handed out. It is about respect I think. Maybe you can be friends away from work if you don't talk about work - have some social time with them. Maybe this is not possible, but it might help. A good leader would look after the people they lead, but still make decisions because they believe them to be the right decisions, not make decisions because people will like them for it. Use sense of humour if appropriate, where you can. Be honest too, that helps. And also, be aware of the people that work there and be proactive with sorting out problems - not wait until it is too late or the situation has got pretty bad.

Leaders are not liked, but respected.

A leader is a person who can walk in front and others will follow.

So a leader must follow all their own rules, plus do more. They should turn up earlier, but not expect others to do so, work later.

When faced with a problem, they will work through the problem, not pass it on to others or blame others.

A leader treats everyone with respect and does their best to be fair.

A leader listens to others, but doesn't follow others.

Most importantly a leader makes people feel good. If you tell someone to work hard and give them a lot of things to do, and they fail, and you tell them they didn't do a good job, then they will be unhappy. But if you give them a lot to do, then support them, then they will try harder.

A leader helps people to solve problems. Every time a someone solves a problem themselves, that their manager should have helped them with, then that leader loses power.

being a good leader doesn't mean being liked by all. You should try to be respected by all.

1. Be fair to everyone.
2. Leaders are there to help subordinates do their job, they serve the group, not by shouting orders, but by developing the abilities, talents and decision making skills of their group.

well no-one is gonna like you all the time...

to be a good leader you need to make sure your priority is the moral of you people...

and right after moral is discipline...and here lies the biggest problem...never show favoritism and if it is even perceived you need to nip it in the butt...cause if unchecked it will destroy the ranks at work...

separate work and play...under no circumstances should the two ever mix...

This is best answered by the age old saying "You can please some of the people some of the time; but, you can't please all of the people all of the time."

Go for being respected by all rather than being liked by all.
