Actually, the heat of summer is the only time you're really not supposed to fertilize. Spring and fall are the preferred times. I try to do mine twice in the spring (early and late) and once in the fall with a winterizer.

Although seeding in the fall where there are harsh winters (i.e NY) then it becomes counter intuitive, as you will have to seed again in the spring. Put down the pre-emergent in early spring any time after April 1rst(is legal to do so) wait about a month and a half, as suggested by the prior post and then seed

It all depends where you live and what kind of grass you have.
I live in Florida and this month I rake the yard to get the old dry st. augistine out. Water it well. Do equal parts of Scotts Bonus S and miorginite. Water in morning for a week.
In 2 weeks its come to life and is green as a golf course.

when its a extremely dry time in the sumerr. monitorr your forcast for rain days why? if you apply it on or before a rain day it does no good if its a very heavy rain it will wash away the top surface. and your just dumping away the nutrients on the top layers.

Early spring, you want to get the weeds before they turn to seed and multiply.
