I'm heading to Vegas this year for a special birthday and would love some ideas of what the very best things are to do. We'll be there for a week so as many ideas as possible please!

Also, would really love to do something very special on the day of my birthday and so was wondering what the best restaurants are out there?

I suspect this is your 21st birthday. And I am well past that age. However, my husband and I go to Vegas 2-3 times a year for the past 10 years. We love it so much we are moving there this summer.
In the meantime, I will try to tell you all the fun places to go there. There is alot there to do, and without knowing you, I can't say for sure what you will be interested in.
However, I will do my best to at least give an overall view and for a first timer.
First of all, we use a particular site to get rooms and show tickets. We research everytime we go there, and this is the best site for prices on rooms, shows, activities, rental cars etc.
http://www.tripres.com/
Check it out for reserving ahead of time. If you decide to go to a popular show, then I advise you to get tickets ahead of time. As it can be very hard sometimes to get tickets last minute.
Also, if you are on the strip there will be alot of FREE stuff to do. Here is a site that will tell you all about the FREE stuff and there are links on that for other activities, like shows, Grand Canyon tours, helicopter tours for just about anywhere in the immediate area, and even helicopter tours just up and down the strip. So make sure to go to all the links and check it out.
http://www.vegas.com/attractions/freeattractions.html
Now if you are staying on the strip, but, don't want to drive up and down trying to find parking. Then the monorail is the way to go. Often times the strip can have alot of traffic on it. And if you are driving around trying to see everything, you will be sitting forever waiting for lights to change, especially on the weekend. The monorail goes from Sahara to MGM on the East side of the strip, and you can reach any casino on the strip from that monorail. It saves alot of time from driving and parking every so many blocks, which can be terrible at times. And you will save alot on Cab fares. Cabs are very expensive on the strip, and the monorail is alot cheaper and it gets you from one end to the other in literally minutes. Here's the site for the monorail, it will tell you all about the stops it makes along the way, prices for tickets etc.
Make sure to check out all the links there to see what each stop offers. It will help you plan which hotels you want to go to along the way and what to see in each one. It's great.
http://www.lvmonorail.com/
These sites will be extremely helpful in getting you alot of ideas on what to do and when to do them. And even how much it will cost.
Personally, I am a little obsessed about getting my vacation planned pretty much. So I use these sites and plan each day. It helps to know how much spending money to have, and what the rest of the trip will cost me.
Make sure you take cash and a credit/debit card. Don't carry a purse or handbag, just carry your ID, your credit/debit card and your cash. In a pocket or whatever. Especially if you think you are going to go clubbing or riding rides. As it's hard to keep track of or ahold of your purse.
Also, I would like to recommend some shows and things that I have enjoyed in the past. Just to give you an idea or two.
Shows:
Blue Man Group at the Venetian is by far our favorite. I don't want to give too much away, but, their show is fantastic. It is so audience participative. They come right out in the audience and they keep the whole audience involved in the show from start to finish. Very energetic show. Lots of cool music, funny skits, it's just amazing. Well worth the money.
We have also seen Le Reve at the Wynn Hotel. This show is also fantastic. The performers are amazing. Very acrobatic, with lots of water, (you don't get wet) and it blows your mind at times. Some of the performers are so good at doing their part as creatures, you almost start to think they are creatures. It amazing. But, of course any of the Circ De Soliel shows are going to be fantastic. See at least one of them. They are worth it.
Also, we have seen Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo and Dirk Arthur at the Tropicana. Both very good magic shows. If you like magic either one would be great for you.
Also, there is a dinner/show at the Excalibur called Tournament Of The Kings. Everytime we go to Vegas with someone who hasn't been, we always take them to this show. For one thing, it's one of the best deals on the strip for dinner with a show. They show is really fun. And the food is surprisingly good. It's a themed show set in King Arthur's time, where several kings from all over Europe come together to compete in a tournament. But, they are befallen by an evil Wizard who will try to kill them and take the world over.
So the Kings must band together to defeat him. There are real horses, pirotechnics, fire, food and audience participation. It's really pretty fun. And the food is good.
Alot of FREE stuff to do as well, don't forget to watch the fountains at the Bellagio, best seen at night. They are amazing. There is the Volcano at the Mirage, the Sirens FREE show in front of the Treasure Island, there are 2 FREE shows inside of Caesars Palace, one at each end of the shopping forums. One is King Neptune and the other is Greek Gods. These are animatronic characters that come to life. And they are pretty cool.
Also, for small fee go up the tower at the Stratosphere, even if you don't dare to ride the rides, the view is spectacular and you can not only see the entire strip, but you can see the whole valley, and it's really awesome. Especially at night.
Also, there are lots of rides, Roller coasters at both the New York New York, and the Sahara, check out the Lions at the MGM or the Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage, or the Shark Reef at the Mandalay Bay, there is a FREE shuttle from Excalibur to the Luxor and Mandalay Bay.
Some of these have a small fee. Just check them all out on the sites I have given you. They will explain alot more about all of these and more.
Just walking around and looking at he casinos is an adventure in itself. Make sure to take it all in. It's a great place to go, and I am sure no matter what you do, you are going to love it.
Have FUN!!!!!!

You know that bar that the Killers named their cd after? Sam's Town? It's on the outskirt of Vegas. Go there just to say you went, they do helicopter trips over the strip. Also a copter trip to the Grand Canyon would be a great idea. If you don't mind a little trip, go see the Hoover Dam, it's awesome. Actually in Vegas, go see a show. I heard the Blue Man Group is brilliant. I ate at The House of Blues, the food was great, huge helpings! Whilst there try all the foods you heard about but can't get here. I can't stop raving about the chilli dog and root beer float I had. Try see the MGM lions, take a walk around the Bellagio hotel. The flower garden reception area is awesome. I partied at Studio 54, they have dancers dancing up the walls, hanging from trapeze's etc. I heard they have a revolving bar in Circus circus. There is just so much to do there, you may start with an itinerary but it'll go out the window as you'll get easily side tracked. It was the best time I ever had, hope you great trip.

I have been planning a trip there as well as working on a school project planning a trip to Vegas. Look at Vegas.com for some really good ideas. There are tons of websites devoted to Vegas, and every hotel also has a site. The hotels list all the attractions available. You'd be amazed at what you can do for free there, but of course it you want to spend a little more money there are plenty of attractions that will cost a few bucks and then some. Some of the most recommended are, The Eiffel tower, Gondola rides at the Venetian, the pool at Mandalay Bay, and the Fremont street Experience.

I've been a couple of times now and have really enjoyed all the shows that I have seen

Blue Man Group - Venetian
La Reve - Wynn
Zumanity - New York New York

I saw we will rock you but it's not on anymore which is a real shame as it was great.

there are some really nice restaurants opening up, I would recommend Corsa at Wynn, lovely Italian restaurant next to La Reve theatre, had a wonderful meal there. Or Stack at the mirage the best steak I have tasted in a long time. You should make hints to whoever you are going with as well that you want to wake up on your birthday with some fresh pastries and coffee from Bouchon near the 'Phantom' area in the Venetian, they are fantastic !!!!!!!!

I hope you had a wonderful birthday out there, I was there on my birthday 3 years ago and I had a fabulous time. Can't wait to go back and enjoy even more next year.

You really need to go to Freemont Street one night, that is the old Vegas, they have a fantastic light show over the street. Also if you are there for a week go to the Grand Canyon (top place to see before you die) it is not that far away. You could also visit the Hoover Dam. There are lots of company's in Vegas that offer trips to both places.
Check out www.virtualtourist.com for other peoples experiences. Have a fantastic time, Vegas is the greatest.

I've never been there. Although if you want a very special birthday why don't you take a trip to the Grand Canyon. Something I've always wanted to do and it's not that far that would just be amazing and you can do the trip by helicopter as well and it doesn't cost that much. I hope you have a fab time :o) I'm soooooo Jealous
