its funny because people in the past thought worms came from horse hair (this is when they had horse and carts) all the horse hair would be on the gound and then the worms would be there after the rain......funny...anyway it is to partly stop drowning but als because the humidity is higher they are able to actually get out and about (they need to be in moist soil to prevent drying out), when its wet on the gorund they don't dry out...till the rain goes away and they dry out!!!
