America is WONDERFUL. It has a variety of ideal places to live, depending on what you like. California is expensive - LOTS of people. Nurses are in high demand everywhere, so you shouldn't have a problem. The pay isn't that great for a entry level nurse, however (if that matters). You will be loved here simply because of your accent (if you have the traditional Aussie tone). For some reason, we eat up that stuff. American's seem to like Australians and their culture, so I hope you will come to like ours, too. You will need to go through the stps of becomming a citizen, and that can take up to five years. But you can work if you attain a work visa. Not hard to do. Good luck!!!

You should definitely come visit! It's hard to find legal work in the United States because of all the rules. If you wait until you have a nursing degree then you may be able to get work as a nurse, there's always a shortage of nurses, but be prepared for lots of paperwork and months of bureaucratic delays.
It's far better to save up some money and come as a tourist. That way you can move around and find out what you like -- if you're working you pretty much have to stay in one place.
It's best to come with a friend to share expenses, because hotel rooms for 2 people are usually about the same price as hotel rooms for 1 person, and you can share other expenses. Especially, you can share the cost of a car. It's hard to get around the US without one.
I hope you make it over here, be sure to stay a while!

America is a wonderful place, and I don't want you to be thrown off by anything that you've heard about living here. It's very similair to Australia in some ways, and you can get used to the differences pretty easily.
Pollution is not much worse in most places than it is in Australia, and crime really isn't that bad outside of the inner city. America has several great colleges and institutions of higher education, and for certain jobs (mostly service and healthcare based careers) the job market is great (for others it's horrible though. Thank George Bush for that when you get here).
I don't know what the cost of living in Australia is, but I don't think that it's too high here in America. It differs from place to place, though, and it's actually pretty extreme in New York City. The housing market fluctuates from time to time, but it's usually fairly strong.
Also, the idea of Americans as prejudiced is mostly unfounded. Although there are some issues with illegal immigration and things such as that, and there is some racism (particularly in the southeast), it is NOT considered socially acceptable to be racist in any part of this country (with the possible exception of isolated, rural Georgia), and I have NEVER encountered any prejudice against Australians and New Zealanders. In fact, most Americans are interested in Australia and New Zealand, and some actually want to go on vacation there.
If you really want to know more about America, I suggest figuring out where you want to live and getting some literature about that particular part of the country. Everything is different in different places (for example, where I live in North Carolina, crime and pollution are much lower than they are in Los Angeles, California), and you could find out simple facts about life in the area, including the cost of living, housing costs, etc.
I hope that you choose to move to our country, and if you choose to do so, I hope that you enjoy living here. If you choose to move somewhere else, I hope that you are happy with whatever decision that you make.

We desperately need nurses. If you are trained, you could probably be granted a work visa easily. You do not have to become a US citizen. It will be expensive in places like NY, San Fran, LA, DC, etc. The middle of the country is not as expensive.
There's something for everyone here. No one will be rude to because you are not American. There's just so many different attitudes and different places to live that I really don't know how to explain what it's like over here.
There is some special deal the US and Australia have. I don't know exactly what it is, but you can research it here:

Good luck. :-)

I live in the US. Nursing is a really hot field. There are cities that I wouldn't consider living in for nothing. But if you want to be nurse you can live about anywhere after school. It's all about where you live and it will take a lot of research. I live in southern Oklahoma and cost of living is cheap and nurses get paid well. We're very friendly to foreigners.

Hi Mez,
It's hard to explain the US to someone who's never been. I'd recommend you apply for a tourist visa and come visit first. Then, if you still want to live and work here, you can begin to make arrangements for a work visa. And my guess is you'd find work as a nurse with no trouble..!
Cheers

Cost varies depending on where you want to live. employment won't be a problem companies are looking for workers all over because our unemployment rate is so low. You do not need to be a citizen if you get a valid visa you will be ok. Let me be the first to say welcome and I hope you have a wonderful time...
