Just some advice: It's a really bad idea to start watching the show starting with the third season. Stop that. The show is continued from episode to episode, and is meant to be seen from the start, otherwise (as you've noticed), it won't make much sense. Also, the first two seasons are much better than the last two. So do yourself a favor: rent the first season on DVD and watch it from the start.

Welcome to "The OC" – where the lives of a group of friends and families have forever been changed by the arrival of an outsider in their affluent ocean-side community of Newport Beach in Orange County, California.
When Ryan Atwood (Benjamin Mckenzie) was taken in from the streets of Chino by then-public defender Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher), the Cohens had no idea how his arrival would change their lives and the lives of those around them. Initially resistant, Kirsten Cohen (Kelly Rowan) opened her heart to accept the outsider just as she had accepted Sandy, another outsider, into her powerful old-money Newport Beach family.
Their “adorkable” son Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) found a friend and brother in Ryan to share his quirky way of looking at the world – and the trials and tribulations of winning the heart of Summer (Rachel Bilson), his lifelong crush.
The first season saw Ryan fall in love with the girl next door, Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton), the daughter of Kirsten's high school sweetheart Jimmy Cooper (Tate Donovan) and his soon-to-be-ex-wife, the notorious Julie Cooper (Melinda Clarke). Ryan and Marissa’s romance, however, is ill-fated – constantly tested by the young lovers' inability to escape from their respective pasts.
