The most historical event of the 60's would have to be the moon landing and the first time that a human being set foot on soil not of this earth. In 4 or 5 hundred years this will be the event of the 60's that will still be in the history books.
Neil Armstrong was the first human to set foot on the moon, and he said: "That's one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind."

Abbie Hoffman, Anita Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Nancy Kurshan, Paul Krassner, and whole lot of other men and women formed the Youth International Party, or the Yippies. If you want to know more about the American counterculture, this would be a good place to start. I have read both Hoffman and Rubin's books. I once had the pleasure to meet Abbie Hoffman in person at a book signing, and he signed my copy of 'Steal This Book', his most famous book, and considered to be the "yippie Bible." There were many other events that occurred in the 1960s, but I just wanted to draw attention to this historical group, and these outstanding individuals.

In music there were The Beatles& Rolling Stones, who dominated the music scene. There were also the Mamas & Papas, Beach Boys and Elvis. Politically the Kennedy Brothers were assassinated and America went to war with Vietnam. In England there was the Profumo scandal and the legalisation of abortion. Worldwide the big thing was the moonwalk in 1969.
