These days there are a few railway company's active in the Netherlands. The biggest one is NS = nederlandse spoorwegen which means dutch railway company.
They used to be the only company owned by the state, it is still the biggest company. But it al changed wen it was privatized in 1995. More company's were getting active.
like Ariva, syntass. Each of them are active in a part of the Netherlands.

The usual reference is NS.
I know that theN stands for Nederlands, but not sure about the S.
