"Ancient" is normally everything before the Early Middle Ages (before the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476) .
("Classical antiquity" is sometimes used for the period between the beginning of ancient Greek history in about 776 BC and the founding of Rome in 753 BC, and the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476.)
The "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" were :
- the Great Pyramid of Giza
- the Hanging Gardens of Babylon
- the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
- the Statue of Zeus at Olympia
- the Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus
- the Colossus of Rhodes
- the Lighthouse of Alexandria (or the Ishtar Gate of Babylon)

There is no consensus on the "Seven Wonders of the Modern World".
The American Society of Civil Engineers compiled this list of wonders of the modern world in 1994 through nominations from across the globe :
- the Channel Tunnel
- the CN Tower
- the Empire State Building
- the Golden Gate Bridge
- the Itaipu Dam
- the Netherlands North Sea Protection Works
- the Panama Canal
[In my opinion the Millau Viaduct, Palm Islands of Dubai, and/or the Grand Canyon's Skywalk should now be on the list, probably replacing the Itaipu Dam, as dams are out of favour nowadays because of environmental costs.]

A list of the top seven tourist travel wonders (not including pilgrimages) was compiled by Hillman Wonders :
- Great Pyramids of Giza
- Great Wall of China
- Taj Mahal
- Serengeti Migration
- Galapagos
- Grand Canyon
- Machu Picchu

Two "New Seven Wonders" lists have been promoted since then.
- In 2001 an initiative was started by Swiss organization New Open World Corporation (NOWC) to choose the New Seven Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments. Twenty-one finalists were announced 2006-01-01. The results will be announced on 2007-07-07.
"New Seven Wonders contenders" in "New Seven Wonders of the World" : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Seven_Wonders_of_the_World#New_Seven_Wonders_contenders
- In November 2006 the American national newspaper "USA Today" in conjunction with the American television show "Good Morning America" revealed a list of "New Seven Wonders" as chosen by six judges. An "eighth wonder" was chosen on November 24 from viewer feedback :
- Potala Palace, Lhasa, Tibet, China
- Old City of Jerusalem, Israel
- Polar ice caps, Polar regions
- Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, National Monument Hawaii
- Internet
- Mayan ruins, Yucatán Peninsula, Mesoamerica
- Great Migration of Serengeti and Masai Mara Kenya and Tanzania
- Grand Canyon (viewer-chosen "eighth wonder"), Arizona, United States
