I've just been to place my order on a core 2 duo 6300 equipped PC (based on the advise from the people in my last question), but when I got on the phone the guy said they have an offer to upgrade AMD units to a 5200 Athlon X2 for the same price (whereas the previous AMD system at this price was the Athlon 4200 X2.

As I understand it, an Athlon 4400 X2 is on par with the CD E6300. I cant afford to spend any more so whilst i appreciate that the intel Core Duo chips muller AMD on the higher end of things, will the AMD 5200 perform better than a E6300 intel for the same money?

Thanks for all your help.

This should help you decide :

Last bit of information :

Remember that the fastest Athlon64 X2 in release doesn't have a chance of beating the fastest Core2Duo available. This means more upgrade choices in the future. Just a tip.

Yes.. it definitely will perform better :) ..
Performance wise Core 2 Duo E6600 and above have a huge performance leap compared to the AMD's coz of their 4 MB cache ... But since E6300 has only 2 MB cache, it won't perform as good as Athlon X2 5200+

yes the AMD will preform much better, well not so much on a high demanding game like F.E.A.R the AMD is only 7 seconds faster.. But on something like Photo shop loading 5 pictures the Intel will be around 8 seconds faster then the AMD. And then when you look at iTunes the AMD will open a large file 35 seconds faster then the Intel... so at the end of the day the AMD is faster, but it all depends on what you want/use it for

unless your into hardcore video encoding then you proberly wouldn't notice any real difference (or even ask this question) go for what is cheaper, I have an 5200 x2 and it does rule.
Since most programs aren't 64 bit in nature the speeds of both will be fairly similar or in other words a 32 bit program is nothing to any make of dual core 64bit X86 processor.

See some benchmarks for yourself:

X2 5200 performance will be slightly above that of the X2 5000 in the tests.

if i have been you i ought to pay the extra funds to get an intel processor no longer an amd, i ought to also flow with a center 2 dou no longer a center 2 quad because you'll likely no longer want the quad center, i ought to purchase the e8400 processor

Yes you are right but consider one more thing that is over heating CPU & recurrent CPU Fan failure causing burnt CPU. It is very perterbing problem with all AMD processors.
