If you want to change from Norton, I don't recommend Mc-Affee. It demands many resources as well. You can try Kaspersky or Esset's NOD32. Depending on the store you buy it from you can choose for a one year license or two years. When renewing your license you will receive discounts as well. Both have top detection rates (you can see the results in various online tests) and don't demand many resources!
If you're interested in free version go either for Avira's antivirus or Active Virus Shield.
From what I can see here there are many that don't understand why free antivirus products can't be better then those you have to pay for. When you get a free antivirus, and generally any free product you don't get SUPPORT for it, meaning if you have problems with it or simply don't understand how it works you'll have to deal with this on your own (by asking friends or joining forums and hoping someone may help you).
If you pay for an antivirus you don't get only support for it, you'll also have quick acces to updated virus database files. Free version let you update only once a day for example.
Not all antiviruses are good though (and i'm refering to detection rates first of all) Norton and Mc-Afee have good detection rates but the problem with them is that they demand newer and better hardware to run on.
If you had an aletrnative to Norton, which had the same detection rates but it wouldn't slow up your computer, what would you choose?

I've had both Norton and Mcafee. My computer came with M, and had an year and a half subscription but had less features than Norton at the time (N 2006).SO I got N. When my subcription to N ran out I went back to M because N had taught me how to understand M because N just was easier to use. What i really liked about N were the tools, like disc clean and the alerts (which M didn't hanve at the time). The lastest version of M has all the features I admired in N and is way faster on restart. Norton Goback takes up WAY too much space on your computer. I'd go w/ M because it's quicker, and has one year, two year and three year options.

I agree! If you have 12 months subscription - USE it! Paid subscription usually provides you with better protection than the free versions. Norton is a good antivirus protector too and for most of us (if we're not subjecting our computer to suspect content) there will be no difference in whether u have.. paid Avast or Paid Norton, they are both good.

Never compromise Security with price and difficulty.
Just imagine, what if your computer got infected compare that botheration with the present one you are facing. I also got Norton, it is complicated, boring, costly but it always protect me from 95% virus.
I also got pre-installed McAffee NOP not good. I knew AVG free version but do not compromise my security with free version.
I can understand how do you feel but my sincere advise when you will ask here people will answer according to their experience. Ask yourself what you want and do that.
Wish you virus free life.

i agree with Ari.N. people here will always advice you to download "free version" of AVG over the net and other security softwares for free download also. but having been reading to most of the people using this AV, they got virus in their computers instead. if free version of AV are all secured ones, why is there a need to release purchasable AV??? i dont have much knowledge about computers, but basing on my experience, and all other well noted companies, i never heard them using "FREE" antivirus just downloaded thru the net. but i guess it only depends on how you use your computer daily and how much does your pocket can afford to purchase one for a better protection as you wish. so i think you have the choice by your ownself which to pick...
