Chocolate is affordable now, this poor consciousness seems to be so embedded in some peoples minds, that they have to go into the past in order to find that the rich could afford something more. If you stop looking with envy on the rich, perhaps you will be able to spend the time to make more for yourself. It is much like anything else when it first comes on the market it is very expensive, once it starts selling and is mass produced it becomes less expensive and available to all who want it . I personally prefer the taste of white chocolates. What about you?

Because it came from South America and took a long time to ship to the European continent. You are looking at months and months, to get to Europe. Like most things, the wealthy have first bite and then eventually it is passed down the social scale. For instance, remember how expensive Cd's were in the 1980's? They cost about £15 each, now they are produced in terms of pence.

Huh? Do you mean "why was chocolate so expensive that only rich people could afford it," or do you mean "Why is chocolate so expensive that only rich people can afford it?" A bar of chocolate only costs maybe $1 these days. Not sure about any other era though.

Because cocoa was so expensive at the time. It was mostly grown in Africa and was difficult to get to. There, stop asking the same questions over again.

because it was originally discovered by european explorers in other parts of the globe like in south america, for example.... so they had to import cocoa to their home country back then... importing it was expensive, and besides, since it was only available in other far-away countries meant it was rare...
