They don't. Why do you think religion is so big there?

The networks aren't the liars, it's the producers who only allow their own point of view to be broadcast that are to blame. Couple that with a closed group that doesn't socialize outside of it's own small circle and you have a self-perpetuating belief structure where everyone you know believes the same thing you do. Remember back in the 1980's when Ronald Reagan won 2 landslide victories and there were 'journalists' who claimed that that couldn't be right because they didn't know anyone who voted for him?
I see it whenever I talk to people at home about what's going on over here in Iraq: people can quote you the number of killed Americans over here, but have no idea of anything else being done (schools rebuilt, roads completed, TOTALLY rebuilt infrastructure, higher quality of life for most Iraqis, and the list goes on and on). Most of the reporters stay in what they call 'Baghdad', but are really on the Baghdad International Airport Complex along with thousands and thousands of troops. It's considerably safer than downtown Baghdad, and they just repeat the stories that others bring in without any way of verifying the accuracy of the stories.
Fortunately, the netowks are becoming more and more irrelevant, thanks to the bloggers and self-destructing old dinosaurs like Dan Rather (remember the forged documents he used to try to alter the 2004 elections (and was never brought up on charges for)?).
And don't even get me started on CNN, who covered up the mass-killings and murders they knew were happening in Iraq while Saddam was in power but REFUSED TO BROADCAST so that they could keep their office in Baghdad. How's that for 'unbiased'?

There are still some pretty good news sources out there... but they are less popular because they do not sensationalize as much.

NPR is good
http://www.npr.org

I also hear good things about the BBC
http://www.bbc.co.uk

Salon .com is interesting
http://www.salon.com

I also found this one to have some substantial public interest
http://www.liveleak.com/

Many people are turning to the blogs for opinions and commentary... because the loud-mouthed pundits on TV are just sooo over the top... but some of the blogs can be that way too. There are too many random blogs that simply parrot whatever they heard on television that day. Not enough people grab a pen and camera and go out and collect their own data.

We've just entered a new era where Americans (out of laziness, apathy and a lack of education) have chosen to blindly accept whatever the television throws at us... giving the media some sort of doomsday mind-control over us...
Too many people are beginning to accept "commentary" instead of actual news.

ACTUAL NEWS should only be Who, What, When and Where...
(NOT the why...)

It's like people don't even stop to question what else might be happening around them while everyone is rambling about American Idol...

I agree (with the answer below) that the owners of networks only allow their opinions plus a bunch of distraction... and that is worse than a lie...
I just don't think he or she is right about that always having a liberal bend... Fox is pretty big over here...

Oh, well, the network that pays the highest amount gets to be the one that's believed. That's why Americans are so rich.

Well, the good news is that most of our news networks contradict each other, so the truth, as is so often the case, probably lies somewhere in the middle.

That's exactly why I don't pay much attention to the news anymore. I look at the headlines and browse through articles that catch my interest, but I don't put much stock into most of it. I know the world by what's going on around me.

Some of us know, some of us don't. Not really my problem.

People need to learn that just because you saw it on TV, doesn't necessarily mean it's true. It's better to be a cynic like me. Then you aren't disappointed or traumatized when yet another illusion or fact has been proved to be bullsh*t.
