That depends on which finger you refer to as 4th. Counting little (pinkie) as 1st, you would be talking about the index finger, it's to point at things, for flicking away dirt, and prising the lid off milo tins. Counting the thumb as 1st you are talking about the ring finger. It is used as a ring holder because it can not be extended by itself, so there is less chance of accidently letting it drop down and the ring falling off. Counting the index finger as 1st, you are talking about the little finger. It is used to show snootyness by holding it out when drinking a cup of tea. I use it to lock with my mans little finger, and hold hands that way :P

i see there is some confusion over which finger is the fourth the ring or the pinkie (i don't know what else to call it) finger i say it is the small one that is the fourth ( four fingers one thumb) and therefore it is for decoration and if we didn't have it we would look like cartoon characters.
