I totally feel the same way. I often joke that people need glasses, or I say it's the lighting. It's an awful feeling and I too blush. Then when I blush I get really hot and my face turns beet red. I wish I could give you some good advice. Through the years I've learned to say thank you, usually it will stop at that. It's really hard to say thank you, when what you really want to do is explain to the person why their complement is wrong.

Take a deep breath and think about what you are going to say. That should help change the old speech patterns. Then just say thank you. The blushing is okay. It can be hard, but with practice you will get it down pat. By the way, Dharma, you look simply fetching in that frock.

Take it as a compliment and don't try to second-guess what they meant by it. Also, you don't have to agree with what they're saying, in fact, you may completely DISagree with it, but their compliment isn't conditional on your believing it. You remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? Well, it's like that.
I know it's hard getting used to compliments, especially when you don't hear them that often, but just smile and say thank you. It gets easier over time, but it DOES get easier.

You have to be more confident with your self.

It's not appropriated to comment a compliment, just smile and say thank you, when you get one.

Good luck

sometimes they actually dont mean it and it's more of a sarcasm instead. so i would either say thank you or just raise my eyebrows with a tiny smile. im not good with compliments either.

I understand sometimes compliments can be more embarrassing than insults. I would just say thank you.

instead of saying what first comes to mind, just say 'thank you'. even if you get embarrassed and blush... that's kind of cute anway.
