In the UK any crack that is within the area of the windscreen that is cleaned by the wipers and at the same time within the area created by having imaginary vertical lines going up from the outer edges of the steering wheel can be no bigger than 1cm. The rest of the 'swept' area can have a crack up to 4cm. The unswept part I believe does not have any restrictions.

As long as the crack is not impairing the drivers vision and it is not the length of the windscreen it is ok to drive, but i do advise getting it replaced asap..Your insurance should cover it, i have a 50 pound excess..but that is cheap for a screen

Depends on the size of it. A small crack poss would be ok but may have problems on the MOT. I would say replace it you can ofthen get this done with fully comp insurance + excess. If a windscreen is not whole it risks being smashed while drving not safe mate don't chance it.

yes - i'm afraid it is. you will not pass your MOT with it. If the Police catch you - you will give you a warning to get it fixed - it they catch you again - they will be more upset.
on a safety note - apparantly airbags will only work properly if the windscreen is 100%

Depends on where you live. In some countries it is, in some states it isnt. Where I live, it is called obstructed view and you can get a ticket for it. Best ask a police officer.
