because you completed the puzzle, so the pieces no longer existed as separate from each other, and were in a way lost, and unless you break the puzzle the pieces will be lost forever. I'm sorry.

You put them together, the individual pieces disappeared and were replaced by a whole item.

Just a guess. Nice metaphor for a few things in life, too...teamwork comes to mind.
