I'm filling out a job application that asks "have you ever been..." to each of the terms above. I have been downsized, but I can't tell the difference between all these euphemisms for dismissal. Anyone know which is which? Thanks!

Laid off means that you lost your job due to financial cutbacks, not due to your performance (like downsizing). The others pretty much mean getting fired.

YES!!! (but they can Sometimes mean the same thing) Being fired means you had some actionable behavior to merit dismissal. In this instance, it could be said you were fired, but it could also be said you were let go. Being 'let go' can often imply though, that you were released for circumstances beyond your control. In a privately owned store, a family grocer might have to 'let go' of a few employees due to poor sales. While this technically Does fall under the fired category, it IS different, because there was no actionable offense or means for the dismissal.

the first three are all termination. period.

laid off is when you have a possibility of being called back to work. usually seen within the larger manufacturing companies.
