I believe social networking sites have become popular worldwide- I saw a report in the newpaper few days back that MySpace and Orkut were getting more hits than **** sites, which is definitely good, right?
I think whether it is about India or some other country- social networking sites are good. It makes people share opinions, it makes people of different nations or (since you specifically mentioned India) states/cities interact and find similarities without political considerations. I think it broadens your outlook for life.
But like all good things, social networking sites are abused often, and only a collective effort on part of the members can prevent it.
Have you considered that even Yahoo Answers is a online community and by interacting through questions and answers with other members you are actually participating in a sort of limited social-networking? Social networking sites have become a part of our lives!
