we tend to see things in terms of "us" and "others." it's an obvious oversimplification, but our brains are geared toward quick categorization - this helps us process lots of information quickly and easily.

it's the same as a person who gets bitten by a dog - deep down they know it's irrational to believe all dogs will bite them, but they've written off all dogs as the same.

and also, disciplines like sociology teach people to generalize individual behavior to society at large.

Fear and Ignorance play a big part in people judging entire groups or races.

Take for instance the Muslim's just because a few radical's did something seriously wrong dosn't mean the whole race is the same. People are grouped to easily these day's as a society as a whole we tend to put everything into catergories.

They had a row with one member of them that made a deep impact on them. Very simple. It's like losing your luggage on a flight and never wanting to go on a plane again. They don't want to risk disappointment, and avoid this by avoiding the entire group.

The same part of our brains that generalizes "fire is hot" generalizes about people that look a certain way or belong to a certain group.

There's also a strong human need to belong, and part of belonging includes defining what your in-group and out-group is. Part of that is assigning certain undesirable characteristics to the out group.

This doesn't make it OK to be bigoted, it's just one way of looking at why it happens.

I think people categorize "things" in the same way too, such as cars, computer, food and so on.
Also, a person who is popular may not be someone who everything thinks he/she is, rather someone whose reputation has preceded him/her.
To put it simply, its fast, convenient and does not too put too much effort on our puny brains.

There are little tricks like telling them "There is no typical archetype for a rapist, so we just don't know. All men must be considered suspect.", "All men have a responsibility to stop violence against women" etc. etc.
