I want to divide a word document into four columns. That's no problem. But I'm not sure how to start typing in the other columns. I seem to only be able to type in the first column.

With columns, you keep typing down and then it jumps up to the next columns.

Maybe what you really need to use are tables.

Create a four column table and simply make the borders invisible (no borders).

put in a column break, because by default the columns will fill up from the left.

If you put the column break in you can still type in the first column. Yes using lots of "enter"s will work but it is very very messy and when it comes to formating text afterwards a nightmare

To be able to type something in the second to fourth columns, the first column must have some words typed in it. By hitting enter several times down the first page, you will be able to move to the next one.

Patience. : )

It's easier done the other way around, type out the whole lot the format it all into paragraphs.
