I've been traveling a lot and I get asked the strangest things like -- so Filipinos eat dogs right? You're a Filipino so.. are you a nurse? Filipinos - really pretty girls (i.e. internet self-mail order brides). At the airport: do you have any food in your bag? So let's hear it, the good, the bad and the ugly. After all, most people would be too polite to say it to your face.

I spent time there about 10 years ago, and I have the following to say.

Of all the places I spent time, my least favorite was Manila.

I LOVED Cebu, and Davau(sp).

The people were VERY friendly, and appreciative. There was a great pride in their country, what it had to offer, and so willing to help out that I had a man go WAY out of his way to show me what Jeepny (sp) to take the to market.

My experience there was done in less touristy areas, so I was able to live a little more like a local (fish and rice 3x a day).

The countryside was very different than the states, but still had MANY great qualitys.

I NEVER had any problems while there, the fact that most people spoke english made the trip VERY enjoyable - as I learned quickly how many local dialects there were! Cebuano?!

I would say that, if I were from Japan... I would choose another destination, as the smaller islands still harbor a great deal of bitterness towards them. (witnessed a resteraunt refuse service to japanese businessmen)

I hope to return there someday, and hope to bring my family along this time. I made some friends in Cebu that I still communicate with, and consider the islands some of my favorite travel memories.

Now the beef I have with Manila...
The only place where I was treated like I was in the way. This might have had something to do with the US Military having an issue with the country at the time.?

Hope this answers your questions.

BTW...
I was told that the eating of dogs IS something that happens, but people are known to eat crazy things here in the US! (fear factor) so, take a little give a little!

I view Filipinos or anyone with my eyes and I make judgments by how people act, not what they look like. I've never heard about any of the things you have been asked. I guess I'm lucky I don't know any people who would say such things.
