In 1997 my brother was murdered. This May would have been his 34th b-day. I want to send a letter to the man who killed him. I don't want to write a letter that is mean or threatning. I want to let him know that for my brother I forgive him. Am I allowed to do this? Is it illegal?

It is leagl. But may I suggest you send this letter through your state victim witness. That way he won't know your address. Also becareful you would be surprised on how many murders use these letters to show the parole board that they have been forgiven, in hopes of an early release.

So long as you do not make any threats toward the inmate or his family, you are free to do as you please. indeed, you may want to contact the prosecutors' office and ask for information concerning the inmate. While the prosecutor may not immediatly contact you, this is the type of thing the DA can sometimes help with. Also, consider that if you cannot find his profile on the DOC website for your area, he may have been killed in custody, transferred to another state for other crimes, or paroled.

You should talk to the attorney you had during your brother's murder trial and ask if you can write the man who killed him a letter, as it will be the 34th birthday of your brother and you can't wish him a happy birthday.

Good Luckj

No, it is not illegal. I comend you on being such a nice person. Most people don't have it in their heart to do something like that. You must be a really strong person and may you have all the luck in the world. God bless you, you are a lot stronger and forgiving than I am.

No it is not illegal and I think it is a good idea and something that could help heal you both. I would suggest having the return address be your lawyer's office though just in case. You don't want him knowing where you live or writing to you.

Yea, you can do it, and I believe that you will hear back if the con is truly repentant, it may help in his rehabilitation. You must be a good person to feel this way, G_D will look to your brother, and bless your family with this kind of action. This is the best kind of courage.

Yes it is legal, as long as there is no threat against him. By what you have said, you must be a good person. I know it hurt you a lot, the loss of your brother and God says, how can he forgive us if we do not forgive others.

Yes, of course you can do it. I would either send it through your family's attorney or his attorney. That way it can be hand delivered, without tampering by prison mailhandlers, who may be cons themselves. It is very admirable that you would want to forgive your brother's killer. I don't know if I could do it myself, but I give you very high standards for having the moral fortitude in doing so.

It is not illegal. You can check with the prison your brother's killer is in.

I am sorry for the loss of your brother. Forgiveness is good for the heart and soul. Take care.

Make sure you say everything that you want to say without being crude. Give it to his attorney or a family attorney that is yours to make sure he gets it. It is admirable and healing you! It is part of the grieving process.
