Just go with Intel Core 2 DUO processor. Period.
Intel Core 2 Duo beats the crap outta AMD 64 x 2 processors. Unfortunately, since the time I assembled an AMD 64 bit solo processor 21 months back, the Intel has overtaken the AMD in a big way.

I have built many computers with the Intel and AMD and never had any problems
Most problems are caused by windows or memory sometimes by the graphics cards if the program calls for a resolution greater than it can produce,
You can go for the AMD athlon x2 it is a good chip I run several versions of Linux and Windows on it with no problems at all. it is the same with Intel there is no problem with it,
your friends have not got a clue what they are talking about, sorry to have to tell you that

Core Duo 2 is more powerful, faster and cooler than Athlon at the moment. But AMD may catch up any day soon.
If you need it now, buy Intel Core Duo 2.

None is the answer. Sorry. The Intel graphics are not going to have the features you need. The NVIDIA is to low. The ATI will burn up. I have done it. Because of the specs that you have given. I will assume that you are talking about laptops. The Intels would be the best bet JUST because of the memory. If gaming on a laptop really need to look at the ASUS line of ROG or Dell XPS. Of course there is Alienware but Dell makes those to and they are high priced XPS. Hope this helps PS no matter what you get keep the graphics chips cool. Most people don't think about anything but the proc over heating.

At the moment Intel has a better CPU than AMD. 2 years ago i would have said the AMD but the intel product is much better at the mmoment. But i would spend heaps of money on the cpu. Instead of getting a reallly expensive cpu i would use some of the money for a better video card. That will give you better performance, especially with vista

Go! for the new Intel Core2 Duo. It's the best out there. There is virtually no problem of hanging, in turn it will help your system run smoothly. The price rates are as follows:
Intel Core2 Duo E6300(1.86GHz, 2MB Cache)- Rs. 9,500
Intel Core2 Duo E6400(2.4GHz, 2MB Cache)- Rs. 11,500
Intel Core2 Duo E6600(2.6GHz, 4MB Cache)-Rs. 16000
Intel Core2 Duo E6700(2.93GHz, 4MB Cache)- Rs.25000
Intel Core2 Extreme QX6700 Quad Core(2.93 GHz, 4MB Cache)-Rs. 52,000
As you can see the line up is teriffic. I have a system and it does not give me any problem so far. What's more I have installed Windows Vista Ultimate over it. Though you should have more RAM for Vista. I have got 2 GB of DDR2 533 MHz. RAM. The best motherboard to pair up with Core2 Duo should be the Intel 965G Express Chipset Based Motherboard or Intel 975G Xpress Chipset. If your are a gamer or enthusiast then go for NVIDIA 680i SLI Motherboard. Intel Boards start from Rs. 8000-Rs. 15000. NVIDIA Boards cost Rs. 16,000/-

Core2 Duo and AMD X2 are both quality and reliable processors. The first may have a performance edge in gaming and processor intensive applications. You won't notice much performance difference if you are a casual PC user.

Some like jelly others like jam...
Myself...I'm a BIG Intel fan...
One big plus for Intel is lack of HEAT...the cooler a CPU runs the longer it will last and the more stable it will be...Not to mention in the summer your room won't Bake with your computer on...
