Can anyone give me 2 ways in which you can enhance the resolving power of the microscope?

And also what objective focuses closest to the slide?

To enhance the resolution of the microscope:
1. increase the angle of light incidence
2. use oil immersion
3. use a blue or violet filter to decrease the wavelength of light used

The high power objective (or the oil immersion lens if there is one) focuses closest to the slide.

The resolution of an optical microscope is defined as the shortest distance between two points on a specimen that can still be distinguished by the observer or camera system as separate entities.

Correct alignment of the microscope optical system is also of paramount importance to ensure maximum resolution. The substage condenser must be matched to the objective with respect to numerical aperture and adjustment of the aperture iris diaphragm for accurate light cone formation and specimen illumination.

You are correct: the compound light microscope would be best. While the electron microscope (in my opinion) is far more detailed in it's results, it works best with dehydrated subjects.
