I am thinking of doing my Yachmaster Offshore 200ton but notice all the jobs require Master 5 or Master 3 etc and wonder which I should pursue.

Thanks

The Master Class 5 certificate allows the holder to be in command of a commercial vessel less than 24 metres in length in trading operations up to 100 nautical miles offshore. An endorsement may be obtained to 200 nautical miles offshore. The certificate also allows the holder to be second in command of vessels of varying lengths in prescribed ranges up to 600 nautical miles offshore. http://www.smit.com.au/subpage/master5.html

Note: The master 5 can have a Skipper 3 endorsement. The Skipper Grade 3 qualification is the "fishing" version of the Master Class 5. It allows command of the same length vessels in the same operating areas where the activity is commercial fishing rather than charter or trading operations.

The Yachtmaster Ocean 'Ticket' normally requires a Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate. The following is a copy of those requirements.

The RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate is a certificate of competency for skippering commercial yachts up to 200 tonnes within 150 miles of a safe haven overseas. It consists of comprehensive package of a 6 day theory and intensive 5 day practical afloat training and includes all STCW 95 training. The 6 week package also includes an additional 5 days of practical sea time plus a 5 day radar course.

In order to be admitted onto the course, you must provide evidence of extensive sailing experience. http://www.mti.net.nz/courses/yachtmasterOffshore.html

Both of your chosen options require extensive experience in the area you intend to operate. The basic difference between the two is the Master 5 is geared toward fishing activities. While the Yachtmaster is geared toward pleasure craft and appears to include sail power.

The entry requirements are stringent such as 50 days at sea, 2,400 NM and four documented offshore trips being in command.

Your decision between the two is dependent on your goals. By the time you get the required experience for either you will probably know which you want.
