I like writing and I would like to be a writer someday, I want to write fantasy novels, but should I learn all kinds of writing styles? Does anyone have any advice on how to start?

Well I like to write too. When I seat down and just write, I write whatever is on my mine. So I would learn the basics of writing, like go to a University or Community College with the best English Department. I'm sure that you will achieve that goal. Do whatever you think is best for you.

It's never a bad idea to learn all kinds of writing styles, but that doesn't mean you've got to PRODUCE all kinds of writing styles. Not every style will suit you, so you'll end up producing gibberish sometimes. Stick to what you like. Advice on how to start. Read lots of fantasy books, watch lots of fantasy movies. Develop a story, borrow (very inconspicuously, mind you) a few ideas here and there, focus on your characters and plot and start writing away. Let me give you a suggestion on characters and story ideas: form a file on your story plot and characters. This way if you don't get to work on your story right away, you can look back on your file so that you remember your plot and the names and descriptions of your characters. And remember: characters are really important--besides a solid plot they are the key to your story. If you have trouble with creating your characters, try finding a book called "Building Believable Characters" by Marc McCutcheon. I'm not a professional writer, but I'm working on it and I've found this book helpful. Good luck!

Write only what you're most *interested* in reading for fantasy. If you end up taking classes for writing, chances are that they won't be doing what you most like to write in.

Nor will they give you any kind of pointers or assistance.

Study your circle of favorite authors' writing styles, and learn from what they've published in the past and the present--by reading and re-reading their books.

I did the same with mine and look at where I am today: 17 books and a whole buttload of experience.

You have to write EVERY day, as much as possible. But, here's the trick: Write a five hundred word essay. Then, write nothing else for three months. Work ONLY on that essay, editing it over and over and over and over until you know how to think and write lucidly. It actually comes to you in the middle of your 200th editing of the same piece: I KNOW WHAT LANGUAGE IS ALL ABOUT!! (Sorta). Then edit it another fifty times or so, piddle, ponder, pick it apart. Then, start a new essay, as practice, a discipline that you should continue for the rest of your life. You have to get down and dirty with ONE piece until you become one with writing. Try writing letters to the editor of your local major newspaper. Also, read everything in your genre, fantasy. Read. Write. Edit. Read. Write. Edit. It works.

I would first and foremost suggest reading as much as you can (but not at random, reading things you actually enjoy) and writing flash fiction and short stories so you can get more comfortable writing before attempting a novel. Check source for some nice tips on writing and everything related.

don't go to a writing class!!!! it will only detrack you. read A LOT. read what you like. write a lot. A lot. just write what you like. only what you like. see if all that writing has some story hidden and then develop it. then you are on your way to be a writer.
