Recently I e-mailed someone thanking them for considering me for an interview for an internship. The problem is I think I was too casual about it, and I'm so nervous that it will hurt my chances for getting the interview. My hope is that this person will consider the fact that I'm in college and young and just excuse it. I'm not good at writing the really formal stuff. Do you think it will hurt my chances of receiving a callback? And what tips do you have for me in the future---how can I work on using formal language? If I don't end up getting it, is it appropriate to ask her what was wrong?

First of all, let me say it's great that you thanked the person for considering you. Depending on what the position is and your take on the interviewer's personality, it may have been better to respond with a written note. E-mail is so pervasive, but managers, interviewers, people in position of authority still rely on the written word. Follow-up could be done as e-mail.

Don't let my first comments put a damper on your enthusiasm. As I said, a lot of young people wouldn't even think of sending a thank you. That's going to get you a big plus. As long as it wasn't flip or cutesy you shouldn't have to worry. It doesn't have to formal--you don't want it to sound stilted. Write down your first thoughts as a draft, leave it for awhile, and then go back and polish it. Just be sure it sounds like you. There are all kinds of books out there (look in the etiquette section of bookstores) on how to write an appropriate letter. You may want to skim through some of them for ideas. Ask one of your English professors for advice.

If you don't get the job, I think it's entirely appropriate to ask why not. In fact, you would gain points by showing you care enough to improve. You could use that time to ask if there's any other position that you could possibly apply for. You may not have been right for the original position because of qualifications, but the interviewer may see potential and work harder to find something for you. If not, s/he may suggest other places or how to improve.

Interviewing is a technique. You need to practice it just like anything else. Get someone who has a job to role play with you until you feel comfortable answering questions. It'll give you confidence and allow you to hone your strong points and smooth out the rough edges.

I wish you well.

Quit worrying. Sending a thank you was good - the person probably isn't likely to think you were too casual unless you started the email with "hey, dude" or something - if you did, then they'd probably think you were a little strange.

If you don't get it, it might not be something you did wrong, just that they found somebody else they thought was a better fit for the internship.

Good luck.

matthew w is correct. Scouts seem at all of the avid gamers on varsity groups even supposing they're freshman. If they see anything or anybody they prefer they're going to wish to take one other seem at you and if you're a freshman then you have got three extra years to get checked out, so sure this might harm your possibilities

I think you need to find your comfidence.....you have it somewhere you just gotta find it...........do what feels right.......there is nothing wrong with being excited........if by chance you do not get it...there is nothing wrong with you asking the reasoning behind it, its good to know what you need to work on right? I think you are just thinking too much into it because you are so excited about as well as the fact that it is always on your mind
