One of the smartest things I ever heard about was leaving a coat draped over your chair, like a decoy. That way, no-one could ever tell if you were there or not. That's pretending to work while you're NOT there! Ha!
Also, I'm so over my job that I no longer pretend. I just do what I want and as long as I do my job, no-one complains. It's a sweet deal.

Stack LOTS of books all around your work area on the floor with several books opened and stacked on top of each other on your desk. Stand up and do stretches every now and then as though you're weary and stiff from long bouts of deep focus. Carry books back twice a day and replace them with new ones. Write the Great American novel in the meantime.

No, I actually work at mine. There is no-one else to do it, so I can't goof off. I wouldn't anyway because I happened to like being employed. The money I make buys me nice things. Too bad some people do not get the concept of giving an honest day's work for their paycheck.

I once worked with this person that was very slick,we both worked as diesel mechanics but also worked on some small gasoline engines, his trick since we work hourly was to shut down the gas line while no one was watching on a gas engine they would assigned him to check so the engine started sputtering and would stop, this he did several times on purpose,so he would work on the same engine for days, the reason he rather work on the small gas engine was because it was cleaner, easier, and sitting down, compare to working on diesel engines that were dirty, huge, outside and always greasy

Maybe you should try just actually working. Would probably be less stressful than trying to pretend.
People usually catch on pretty quickly to someone who pretends to work a lot.

Pretending to work, but not actually performing any work is theft. I work hard and am continually busy. If you're not, you are not giving your employer what he's paying for.
Must not have very good management where you work.

If you're already stuck being there for eight hours; why not kill time by actully working? Time will go by twice as fast if you're busy. Work hard, and you'll get more money too!

It depends upon your job. Different jobs require different techniques. If you're a chef, walking around with a chainsaw isn't effective.

Never. If I have no tasks to tend to...I'll go to my employer and tell them..." I have things to tend to and keep me busy...but if you have something else for me to do right now...I'll do that. If not...I'll go tend to what I'm doing...I have things to keep me busy ".
When those times do come up that I express that to an employer...they have shown to be appreciative and either assign a task to me or they'll say...no thanks...you go ahead and tend to what you feel needs to be done...thanks for letting me know though.
Me being hired by a business...an employer...I don't like to take advantage of their time...I don't like to abuse their money to be pretending to be busy. Yes...I do have value for myself and others and have morals...so there.
My profession . . . Secretary / receptionist.
.
~ ~ ~ " It's getting deep in here " with what ? . . . People of self value and value for their employers ? Morals ? Then...yes.." it's getting deep in here ".
