I have done some research on some recent labor disputes between companies and the labor unions. Astonishing enough is the fact that over the last 4 years, 68% of the labor force who have withheld labor from their employers has been over nothing other than respect and safe/rewarding work places.

Now I know employers have the right to hire and fire, however employers in the Midwest alone are having an extremely difficult time recruiting new talent especially in the Aerospace sector. So now employers are beginning to ask the same question you just asked. What new motivation and ideas can we implement that will bring communication levels up, and retain the employees we currently have.

What these companies have found is simple respect, and giving the employees on the floor ownership of the process in which they work. This is laying the ground work for future programs that will benefit the company as well as the employees who work for them.

I don't know how "new" this is, but I've read several things indicating that for many employees, time is more valuable than money. So flex-time scheduling options, shared job options, and more time off are all popular, even if the employee makes less money as a result. More and more of us are realizing the truth of that old rule of thumb: "On his deathbed, no one says I wish I had spent more time at my office."
