In most municipalities, if the mentally ill has been singled out to a medical institution that knowingly turns them away believing that they might be a danger to themselves and others, then that person commits a crime because of it, the medical institution can be held accountable for manslaughter by depraved indifference. Most times all the law needs to show is that the patient had a treatable mental illness, that if gone untreated, could lead to that person committing a crime. They also need to show that the hospital staff was made aware of the patient, but decided to not to act and help the patient get the treatment either through them or referring them to another facility. Not only can the hospital be held responsible, but so can the doctor as well was any staff member that knew of the situation yet did not try to help the patient.
