I am having a house built in rural Idaho and want to have the look of a fireplace but the efficiency of a wood-burning stove. I don't want to pay for a big fancy chimney up the outside of the house. I just want to have the look of a fireplace inside. Is this possible (legal) and how?

There are now pre-fab "EPA" fireplaces available on the market. They use inexpensive double wall 1700 degree pipe and can be vented directly through the roof. They can also be wood framed and finished on the outside with any number of materials, just like a pre-fab traditional fireplace. You're still looking at roughly $3000-$6000 for the unit, pipe, and installation. This does not include your decorative facing (stone, brick, tile, sheetrock, etc.) to make it look finished.

and to answer your question..an insert CANNOT be installed using just stove pipe and no chimney. Only free standing stoves.

Do some research and you'll find that this type of fireplace meets the same restrictions as wood stoves and have the same efficiency ratings. (65-80%) My favorite model is the 44 Elite by fireplace xtrordinaire. check it out!

yeah, I think it is. Now they have those zero clearance fireplaces and use vents that come out of the side of the house instead of the old chimney. Check with the local building inspectors and see what they say.

Yes it is possible. I have a wood-burning stove with triple wall pipe for safety. I must tell you - you are not going to like the price of triple wall - it is very expensive. I think I paid two or three dollars an inch - ouch!

My father-in-law did just what you're saying.

You can actually build a fire place that will heat very efficiently.
A friend of mine built a house about a year ago & put one in, & that thing will throw some heat!!
Do some research via the web, you may find a design that will work within your budget.
Good luck!

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/FwtgK
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
