US politicians and most of the US public are allowing China to gain the long term upper hand by not keeping up with our rate of education and, hence, innovation. America is a country founded on innovation as our competitive edge. Over the past 30 years our share of the patent pie has been eroding. China is making inroads on low cost manufacturing front (no big deal, we already moved most of that manufacturing out of America anyway), but they are reinvesting the dividends in hard core education, especially science and technology.
If China and the US remain on their 'education trajectories' than at some future stage our overall level of power might become balanced against one another. However, this is very long term. The US has the ability to nullify China's power gains through superior education, unleashed creativity and a renewed emphasis on science. We need another Space Race. I submit the Energy Race, the race to innovate new energy technology that frees us from the corrupt oil producing regimes while giving us a future product / service to market and make a lot of $$ selling to other countries that don;t have fossil fuel... like China:)

Wait hold on their. Now who is making China so rich with western money. You better think that one through before you open your mouth. Next time you go in a store and buy something look at the label and see where it came from 8 out of 10 items will say China on it. So now how do we keep China from getting so rich and powerful you answer that one.
Remember the old Fraze buy American, if we did that who would be the top dog.
A business corespondent said that if just Wal-Mart would stop buying from China it would put their economy into a tail spin that would take years to recover from.

China, whether "red", "black", "white", "yellow", or any other color has become one of the world's most powerful nations through trade agreements with other world governments.
Yesterday, I shopped at a local Wal-Mart Supermarket, searching for catfish fillets. Lo and behold I found some. Where did they originate? China! I did not buy the fillets.
Today, I will teach in an American public school that has a Chinese exchange teacher, teaching Mandarin Chinese to American students! The metropolitan school system I teach in even has a school devoted to Chinese studies, staffed by Chinese teachers who have been given visas into the U.S.
The U.S. is not only allowing China to become the world's most powerful nation, we have asked them to become that!
I have a niece who works for Qual-Com, one of the most renown U.S. technological industries in America. She spent two years in China promoting Qual-Com's products, encouraging the Chinese government to buy and install Qual-Com technology. The "all-mighty dollar" will prevail, "Capitalism rules", and the Chinese government will take every opportunity they can to use any resources offerred by the U.S. government to promote their agenda, which is to become the most powerful nation in the world.
The U.S. has already "allowed" China to become a dominant power in the world. Could China become the world's most powerful nation? My opinions is, yes.

Its going to happen - They will end up owning us. - The U.S. is now the world's largest debtor nation and China is about to pass the U.S. as the world's largest exporter. The trade deficit has helped build China into a powerhouse and given the Chinese lots of dollars with which they can buy up America - But China doesn't need our trade deficit - We do. - Eventually China will get tired of loaning us money. Then China will raise the wages of its workers so that they can afford to consume the goods that they produce.

what is powerful they will become more powerfull of coarse. the goal I think is to make the world so interdependent on one another that I dont think we will go to war in that way unless something catistrophic happened in a way that only effeted the west and no th e rest o fthe world then there would be a empty viod to fill. then china might try. but with the amound of nuclear weapons around I think peace will allways prevail, it detures wars. grated right now we are a little war happy. but the wind of change in the next 40 years will change that I think. The fact is china will probably find there is more power in capitalism than militarism and you cant make a profit if all your customers are dead.

What do you mean, will the U.S. "allow" them?
The United States are not the rulers of the world, and it is not up to them to "allow" another country to become powerful.
Why, are you afraid that your country won't be Top Dog anymore?
If you're worried that the rest of the world will stop caring what Americans think, then don't worry, it's already gotten to that point...
