The rear sprocket on my '81 Honda CB400 has about 1cm of loose rotation compared to the static wheel. Is this normal or should it not move relative to the wheel? None of the bolts are loose. I am aware there are rubber dampers in the wheel hub, could these be worn?

There should be some play to the rubber dampers. But not too much. If you take the sprocket off and look at it, the dampers should fit in pretty tightly. If they don't, then they are worn.

you say that the rear wheel locked at sluggish speed and you're asking in case you could journey it for yet another a hundred thirty miles? You intense? You enable the sprocket and chain get in that undesirable a condition ...what's something of the bike like? If I have been you i might get the entire component precise serviced and new chain set etc in the past getting it everywhere close to a street.

The rubber dampers take some of the stress off your chain. But next time you have the wheel off, inspect those rubber inserts and make sure they are in place properly.

yes the ruber is just for shock so you dont down shift and snap the chain. if the sprocket moves side to side or wiggles the hub is worn
and you need a new one. the chain can fall off on the freeway and lock the back tire. not good. or it can fall off when you need it most like getting out of someones way that just cut in front of you. its cheaper to get a new rim.

I think 1 cm is just a little bit slack.

Rotation is ok. Sideplay is not.
