I have an old sewing machine from the 60's. It is in amazing condtion, and came with all of the original stuff plus manual. I got it for like, 25 bucks at Goodwill. I was still considering buying a new one though. (This one weighs a TON!) I'm not sure if it was worth it, or if there were considerable enough advancements in sewings machines? Just curious as to everyone's thoughts....

It really depends on how often you sew, what kind of sewing you do most often, where you will be sewing and what stitches you use (or want to use).

If you only sew occasionally, only use simple stitches and can set up your machine easily, then you DON'T need a new machine!! You have a tool that will meet your needs!!

If you sew often and want to use different stitches and you have to haul your heavy machine up and down three flights of stairs to set it up -- then maybe you need to check out a new machine!!

I just replaced my 38 year old sewing machine (a birthday present on my 21st birthday!!) which was a real work-horse and served me well!!! with a new sewing machine AND a serger!! Of course, my daughters are now grown up and now I have time to PLAY!!!

Good Luck!!

I have a 20 or so year old Kenmore from Sears, that I got at a garage sale, it's great for heavy work but mine just got to be unreliable for medium/lightweight and knit fabrics. It wasn't stitching regular, and it was really making me frustrated with all of my projects!! I finally got to the point that I started looking around for a new one.

Since I'm on a budget and I can't afford a Janome, or anything that a super sewer is going to use, I got an old reliable Kenmore from Sears lol, I actually just got it today! It was 180(on sale for 169.99 from 200.00) after taxes, and it has all of the regular stuff plus lots of neat extras that the old ones don't, I needle threader, easier threading, better lighting etc... and on. And that was one of their upper range Kenmore's too, you can get a basic basic one for about 100.
They are a lot lighter mine is 17lbs. And I would consider if you plan on sewing regularly, instead of just fixing torn clothing you will want something new.

Good Luck

If you want computerized automatic embroidery, then a new machine is for you. Otherwise, stick with the old one, hopefully you have a dedicated space for it so you don't have to move it around. As far as basic functions, sewing machines have not changed.

hugeeeeeeeeee advancements, keep the old one for denim and heavy work, get a new one with fancier stitches or a walking foot or even an emboidery machine to help fire your creativity, all a matter of cost as to how far you go.
