Most of the neighborhoods in the area are somewhat historic. However, most people refer to the Beacon Hill area or the Back Bay area when thinking about some nice historic places to live.
Back Bay being the more affordable of the two.
Hope that helps!

Well most all of Boston and Cambridge would be old, and therefor historically significant. Also, keep in mind you could look at places along where Paul Revere went along the famous midnight ride- Charlestown, Somerville, etc. Also, there are famous cities, like the battle of Lexington/Concord. Those are very close cities to Boston. Also Arlington. Lots of options!

Charlestown, East Boston and South Boston are also historic areas.
In Cambridge, anything around Harvard and MIT is considered historic.

Beacon Hill is where the state house resides, and is considered one of the oldest and wealthiest areas in Boston. For a slightly more affordable option, check out the North End, which is Boston's "Little Italy", also the site of the Old North Church (Paul Revere fame).
