Barefoot always! I have been barefoot for ten years and do not intend to wear footwear ever again.

It's not as dangerous as people think. Our skin is made to keep pathogens out, we're at far greater risk picking something up with our hands. The only worm that can penetrate our skin is the hookworm, which has been pretty much eradicated from the south since modern plumbing and never was much of a problem in cooler climates. Athlete's foot can't get a hold of bare skin, it is a fungus that you pick up by going barefoot and then putting your foot *back into a shoe* which is warm, moist and dark.. keep the skin bare, well-ventilated, light and dry and any spores you pick up will just die. Glass isn't a problem, I never divert my step no matter how much I see and I get a tiny splinter maybe once a year, never had a cut. Dog poo is gross but I'd rather step in it barefoot so I feel it and can wipe it off than step in it shod and not notice until I've walked all over the house, then it's still gross to wash off my shoes and I have to clean the carpet too! Same with ants, the only ant problem I've had was when I wore boots, I didn't feel them until the buggers reached the skin, by then they were all over my boots and the inside of my jeans. Barefoot I've stood near ant hills, noticed them immediately so I could step aside and wipe the first one or two ants off my foot.
There are no health laws requiring shoes in stores & restaurants, insurance companies don't require or even recommend footwear for customers and there are no laws requiring footwear for driving.

Barefoot - Definitly barefoot always. It's so much more comfortable and fun rather than wearing confining shoes. Bare feet are healthier without shoes also.
