Why did they start calling doughtnuts "doughtnuts"?

nuts are tools and what a nut is is a circle with a whole in the center. donuts are made from dough therefore the name dough-nuts.

Because they're made out of dough, and I don't know why they consider it "nuts." They should call it doughholes, because it has a hole in the middle.
