OK, I was prepared for a little country sewer smell...I recently moved into a small house about 15 miles from town. It is a live in position that is free housing as a perk of my job. The property is 3 homesteads (my house idle for a while) bought up by the prev owner and we use them all, probably three different wells, etc, at any rate the other water systems don't smell like this.

MINE on the other hand has this horrible smell coming from the shower drain...honestly, it smells like someone pooped right in the shower stall. It is stinking up the whole house and there is no specific time that it's worse, such as before or after using it or when the water is or isn't running. The water itself doesn't stink or taste bad.

So is this what bacteria products like RidX are for?

if the house sat empty for awhile it coud be a few things.
1. it was never winterized and the water in the p-trap froze and cracked the trap. It no longer will hold water, sewer gas will flow up from it.

2. it could just be a bacteria, pour some bleach down the drain.

3. there is no p-trap on the shower drain.

If you got a basement, look under the shower for a trap and make sure it's not leaking, same for a crawl space. I'm pretty sure what you are smelling is sewer gas. Just in case, the trap is the "U" shaped thing under a sink/bathtub/shower. It seals out odors.
