That shouldn't be a problem as long as you select the right algae eater. Most algae eaters sold in stores will quickly out grow a 10 gallon tank. The typical algae eater is a Chinese algae eater and will not only outgrow the tank, but get really mean as it grows. The second most popular algae eater in stores is the common pleco. They easily grow to 12" and more in aquariums. You best best is to try a small local pet shop and ask about smaller pleco species such as bristlenose or rubber lipped plecos. These stay much smaller than their common cousin. If you are willing to use a smaller algae eater, Oto cats are a really good choice for a 10 gallon with a betta. Otos stay small, are interesting to watch and are peaceful enough not to bother the betta.
Hope that helps

what kind of algae eater? a pleco? i have had plecos and betas in the same tank and no problem. just remember to feed the pleco algae tablets. there will not be enough algae on the glass to feed the pleco. also, plecos do not eat all kinds of algae so you may be left with green spots anyway. be sure and have a good filtration system as a fish that eats alot of greens also makes a big mess. the common pleco gets 12"-14" long so that 10 gallon take won't last very long.

There are a few types of algae eaters. I don't think there is any problem with betta because their shape is not similar with betta. I recommend a bristle-nose pleco because it will not outgrow your tank. Oto is an algae eater too but it is not your choice as you said you want something bigger than your betta.

No problem at all, an algea eater or pleco will have no problem to co-exist with a betta or fighter fish as their living level in the tank are completely different, and none are known to be agressive except for their own species. Go ahead !

It's hard to say, most algae eaters have longer fins, and the betta may attack it because of them. I personally wouldn't do it, but my betta is a jerk, yours may not be. Don't get a common pleco, it will outgrow your tank before long.

Albino coy's are bottom feeders, not algea eaters, but they do the best with male betta. Plecos are great fish that are non-agressive, but a male betta will bite it's fins off. :(
