I'll have to assume you are talking about an electric impact wrench. They are used the same way an air impact wrench is used. They tighten or loosen engine bolts, tire bolts, and any other bolts on the car or truck.

Not everyone has an air compressor to run the air wrenches

Small wrenches (3/8 and smaller) were sometimes called distrubuter wrenches and were used for points and condenser changes and the nuts on coil wires.
