Ska is something that started in Jamaica and moved to the United states. It's mostly heavy on horns. I think what you have heard more is Ska music in the mainstream United States.
That Ska is more punkish. Bands like Mustard Plug, Streetlight Manifesto, No Doubt, and Reel Big Fish are some bands that have received some big pushes by the radio. You may recognize Mighty Mighty Bosstones who were pretty big. This is the third wave of Ska and has mostly slowed down due to the scene changing to more pop rock.
Ska is still very much around and Warped Tour is a great place to discover some new Ska bands.

1st wave ska is Jamaican reggae with backgrounds to American blues. Example: The Wailers.
2nd wave ska is also known as "two-tone ska", which utilized keyboards and concert instruments (trumpet, trombone, saxophone, etc.) and a more rock-n-roll feel and really only lasted in the 1970's in England. Example: The Specials.
3rd wave ska is based on punk, with the concert instruments thrown in. Examples: Reel Big Fish, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Streetlight Manifesto, Catch 22, Mustard Plug.

I've always known ska to be a combination of punk and reggae. Check out Real Big Fish, they're a pretty good example.

Jamaica-originated music genre that combines elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bassline, a scratchlike tempo, accented guitar or piano rhythms on the offbeat; and in some cases, jazz-like horn riffs. Originating in the late 1950s, it was a precursor to rocksteady and reggae.[1]
