"What were some TRAGEDIES and some TRIUMPHS in the American Civil War?"
The most outstanding tragedies were the inability to settle the dispute politically, the loss of life (military and civilian), and destruction of property.
The most outstanding triumphs were the emancipation proclamation and the end of slavery, the improvements in medical corps (see John Letterman), and the military defeat of the Confederate States.

Depends on what you're looking at... political? battle victories?

I think a major triumph overall was that people realized truly their rights as Americans. That's just my personal opinion though. But think about it, their ancestors came to this country because they had no rights, so to have the right to vote, to have the right to secede, to have the right to speak out about something was pretty amazing!
