thanks for the link.. if you follow homeopathic medicine... then you might realize that this was proposed over a year ago & yes it is a huge threat... even to the fundamental level of Freedom of Choice --- the person who said they produce supplements is referring to something other than H.R. 2510

Not only are powerful, large corporate forces behind this (the monopoly and tyranny you mention) so is the insane leadership that this country is currently under.. but it is an even larger issue than this

The person who said they make suplements & simply had to prove that their claims were true...... well have they read the latest proposed legislation?? Apparently not..... how do I determine this... well, if they have read H.R. 2510, then they would be in fear of being put out of business because they would be determined to be ILLEGAL unless they managed to get thier supplement approved as A PERSCRIPTION DRUG TO BE ONLY ADMINISTERED UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A PHYSICIAN...

Do I need my Dr to tell me to take Vitamin "E" or to add Cherries to my diet? NO... but please think about this... how do you suppose I found out about colloidal silver... well, given that I am allergic to 100% of the known pharmaceutical company antibiotics and I have asthma as well as Multiple Sclerosis.... when I caught a bronchil virus that then married with a sinus infection to become bacterial pneumonia.... this was the only thing they could do... otherwise I would (1) die from the infection or from lack of oxygen due to the triggered asthma attack, or (2) die from the angio-adema reaction to the antibiotics that I am allergice to......

Okay.. so then you argue... see it easy to get your Dr to administer & monitor... do you honestly think most Doctors are trained in that type of medicine... the answer is NO....in fact, In the above mentioned pneumonia (was in 2000) I was hospitalized for 3 months before someone could figure out what to do... other things had been tried to boost my immune system like Golden Seal & Euchinacea, Xylitol (made from Birch Trees) which completely got rid of the sinus infection, but not the bronchial or lung part of the infection.... and finaly a doctor that was VISTING FROM PAKASTAN was asked his opinion.... you see in some of these counties the majority of folks can't afford perscription medicines... so they have had to keep the "original medicinal knowledge" intact in order to treat the majority of people as inexpensivly as possible

Not only am I allergic to antibiotics, I have MS & I also allergic to muscle relaxers, anti-inflamatories & pain medicines..... Thank goodness the Dr from Pakastan knew about Cherries and shared this with me in 2000 (many years before that became popular knowledge in the US)

How much will you have to pay for your Vitamin C that you take when you have been exposed to a cold after Big Pharm gets thier way... one way or the other

In all things we do, we have to consider the larger pictures... others that might be affected... the long-term costs..... all decisions must be made based on what if the worst case scenario comes from this???

Please, please, please research it... find out..... keep freedom of choice, if not for yourself, for the good of people (what if your kid was allergic to everything like me? what would you decide to do then?)

Thanks for posting! I posed the same question in hopes of helping spread the word about this horrific proposed plan- Docket No. 2006D-0480, Draft Guidance for Industry on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products and Their Regulation by the Food and Drug Administration.

It is so vital that the public understands that this will mean the FDA’s power over the Natural/Alternative industry will increase drastically- NOT a good thing! Comments and other actions are only effective until April 30. Then the FDA isn’t required to listen to the public and our chance to affect the outcome of the proposal is lost. Does acupuncture still come under the heading of alternative medicine? If so, yes, I would put some faith in it and I am considering trying it for a particular ailment (haven't yet). I've read and heard a lot of positive results from it. Other than that, I'm not sure. I'm a firm believer in "mind over matter", and I do believe in the power of placebos. But right now, the only thing I need medication for is high blood pressure and I am afraid to take any chance with that as far as not following my physician's advice and taking the meds he prescribes.

J.W.H. I read your post and while I agree with your interpretations of their intention, I want to offer some food for thought on where I don't like the direction.

Perscription drug research and clinical trials have backing and monetary support....they also charge and arm and a leg to combat the cost of research/trials ....for alternative medicine to validate their claims on functionality of a product there is no monetary equivalence to fund trials, we also would not pay $400 for a monthly supply of vitamin E for example ....etc.

So my concern is that it ready in fact does mean taking a limb from alternative medicine as we know it. Right now alternative medicine's best research ability is us that are willing to research, take supplements (etc), and report feedback contributing to the research. I don't know without government and big industry aid, that we can adhere to the requirements the FDA will set forth.

If you (or anyone) has further information on how this issue will be handled I would love to be kept informed.

I think you must work in the alternative medicine INDUSTRY. You guys should be working harder to clean up your acts and police yourselves so the government doesn't have to.

I have used several herbal products, and have been blessed to live in an area where I can find useful herbs, too. People who make herbal supplements and mislabel them, or put stuff in them that doesn't belong are doing something CRIMINAL -- or at least it should be. They give all things herbal a bad name.

The government will never be able to control all aspects of herbalism -- unless they are willing to take agent orange and wipe out the entire landscape. There will always be dandelions, and chamomile and wild raspberries to help us through our ills.

To tell you the truth, I am very leery about trusting any herbal products I can buy off the shelf. There's no telling how old they are, or even if they actually have what they *say* they have in it.

If people want to try alternative medicine, I suggest they read, educate themselves, then try growing it themselves.

Baa, to you, Mr. Penumbra. You really are a shadowy creature, if we're going to trade insults.

You sir are mis-informed.. the FDA is not getting ready to destroy alternative medicine.. what they are about to do is require the alternative medicine mfgs.. to prove their claim.. there is so much trash being sold in this country, in the name of good medicine, that it has gotten out of hand.. All the FDA is doing is protecting you and all of us from being ripped off by some outfit making claims that are not true.. They say prove it or remove it.. they will still be able to sell the product.. but they will have to stop the BS..I manufacture a product that is sold in drug stores in four states.. it is a great product.. the FDA came to our office and said hey if you are going to make this claim.. show us the scientific proof or quit claiming it.. it was tough but it is something that needed to be done.. we now follow the fda regulations and will soon be an approved lab... oh and our product? what we claim.. we can back it up.. I say thanks FDA.. you are doing a great job of protecting the American public.. And, I will tell whomever wants to listen.. The FDA is great!

Thanks for the link! Since the FDA approves any bonehead RX despite the dangers I'd rather have choices thank you very much. Look at all the "new wonder drugs" recently that have suddenly been recalled or given new dire warnings when people died, went blind or had heart attacks because of these "safe" drugs.

There's no sinister plot. No one holds a gun to anyone's head to make him/her take rx drugs. People are responsible for their own actions: watching the commercials for Nexium, Lipitor, whatever, and then rushing off to their doc and asking for it. No plot there, baby, just stupid, lemming-like behavior.

Next time you're offered a prescription ask: do I need this? what will happen if I don't take it? Many times you'll find that the med isn't really needed after all. It's up to each of us to take care of our own health.

Natural supplements are no magic bullet either: mostly sugar and starch and hogwash, and rob you of your $ and your health just the same as rx drugs. Wise up, eat well, exercise, and do your best to stay healthy. Then you won't need rx meds OR bogus supplements.
