It won't do any harm since you are in neutral. But by doing that, you lose the engine braking and it makes it harder on your brakes.
Why not just leave it in gear and if you get going a little fast, then let off the gas a little and the engine will slow you down instead of wasting your brakes?

It depends on the hill. If it's a really minor hill, you're just breaking the law. If it's a long or steep hill, you're also being suicidal.
Brakes aren't made to burn up all the energy of a big descent. The brakes will overheat, "fade", and you'll find you can't slow the car down. It could cause an accident and get you and other people killed.
You HAVE to downshift and use engine braking to descend the hill. That's not just sane... it's the law.
Ideally, on a long hill, you should downshift and slow down enough that you're using the brake pedal very little. As you know it takes more effort to stop a car that's rolling downhill, so you need to keep your brakes cool and in reserve.

Driven a manual for almost 20 yrs, and do it all the time--as long as you put the clutch in before taking it out or gear or putting it back in, it shouldn't hurt it!
I love my manual transmission because I feel I have more control over the way the engine runs--or at least how efficiently. Many automatic transmissions shift the gears too early or too late & it doesn't "sound" right to me. :)

It won't damage the transmission but you have given up control in case you need to accelerate to avoid a situation. Leave it in gear and let the engine slow your descent down the hill so you do not have to use your brakes.

Won't hurt the transmission. Being in neutral could up your speed if the slope is a big one For example I would not recommend going down Wolf Creek Pass in neutral.

yeah, thats fine dude. i drive an 87 5 speed honda in seattle. lots of hills out here and i pop it into neutral all the time.

It's a bad idea. You can forget what you're doing, and sometimes it's hard to get it back into gear ESPECIALLY if you're not sure what gear you need to be in.

It's fine, you'll just glide. Just make sure not to put it in reverse or a really low gear if you're in a high one.

no harm to the motor BUT youll have no braking power it would be best just leave it in gear just in case you have to stop right away for animals, something on the road etc....
